While face steaming is usually seen as a luxurious side of skincare, it is not. With the benefits of face steaming, you can care for your skin all while being easy on your pocket.

The skin is the biggest organ of your body. Thus, it becomes extremely important and significant to take care of it in every manner.

Skincare routines are already an essential part of keeping your skin healthy. But, the benefits of face steaming have gained popularity in recent times for all the right reasons.

I have been practicing face steaming frequently. It has been an incredible help in opening my pores and cleaning my skin in the best possible way.

In this blog, I’m sharing some easy DIYs and benefits of face steaming that will improve the quality of your skin too.

5 Amazing Benefits of Face Steaming for Your Skin

Face Steaming allows your skin to loosen and open the pores to get rid of any dirt and impurities. It makes your skin glow. This is why, it has been a great addition to skincare routines as well.

How to steam your face in 5 simple steps?

I have always approached skincare and haircare in a simple and non-chemical way. As I am more of a DIY person, I believe in limiting the use of beauty products. I only use them when they are absolutely necessary.

To enjoy the benefits of face steaming too, I like to keep it simple. Here’s how I do it:

  • Boil some water in a pan until it steams.
  • While the water is steaming, wash your face.
  • Pour the steaming water into a big steal utensil, preferably a bowl.
  • Add your favorite essential oils to make it an at-home face spa treatment.
  • Now cover your head with a towel or a blanket and keep your face above the bowl.

That’s it. This is how I steam my face.

Ideally, if you don’t want to go through this hassle, you can also invest in a face steamer.

Next, you can either use a charcoal mask or blackhead strips to pull out the impurities from your face. Lastly, use a toner to close your pores and use your everyday moisturizer.

Let’s learn about the benefits of face steaming now:

1. Face steaming opens your pores

If you haven’t tried face steaming yet, you definitely should. Because steaming your face gently opens your skin pores.

Open pores help the skin to pave the way for any dirt or impurities, without being harsh on the skin. They soften the blackheads, whiteheads, or any acne that has been residing on your skin. Hence, when you practice scrubbing or the entire skincare routine after a face steaming, they are removed easily.

Opening your pores with facial steam also removes the dead skin cells, bacteria, and other impurities that clog the pores and contributes to unwanted acne and blemishes on our skin.

2. Face Steam allows the free flow of natural oil

Face steaming helps in releasing the sebum which is trapped beneath the surface of our skin. But, what is sebum?

Sebum is the natural oil that is produced by the sebaceous glands in the hair follicles of our skin. It gets trapped due to excessive sebum production or due to the clogging of the follicular opening of the hair.

Free flow of sebum during the face steam helps to prevent blockage and dirt build-up on the skin. Sebum, being a natural skin oil, serves different benefits to the skin. It hydrates and moisturizes the skin. Then, it protects and lubricates the facial hair and skin. It also helps to get rid of the toxins present in our skin. All this together contributes to keeping our skin clean and healthy.

3. Face Steaming boosts the blood circulation

Face steaming improves the blood circulation on your face. When steam combines with increased perspiration, it dilates the blood vessels of the skin. This results in increased circulation. How does this happen?

When the temperature around our skin rises, the thermoreceptors present in our skin sense the change and release the signals to the brain. The signals tell the brain to make your body adapt to the heat. To fight the heat, the body dilates the blood vessels. Thus, more blood flows to the skin. A similar process happens when our face is exposed to face steam.

Good blood circulation has a lot of benefits. For the face, it helps in bringing more oxygen and nutrients to the skin. Also, it promotes collagen and elastin production. This gives a smoother and more youthful complexion.

4. Face steaming helps in the absorption of skin products

It is usually advised to follow the face steaming with your skincare routine. This is because the face steaming process increases the permeability of the skin. It prepares your skin to receive and absorb the products you are about to apply to your skin.

With all the cleaning and exfoliating, face steaming makes it easier for the skin to make good use of the product you are using. Thus, you need a lesser amount than usual. Because now your face is cleaner than normal. Hence, it will absorb even a lesser amount with more effectiveness.

All this naturally prevents unnecessary wastage of both the product and the money.

5. The medicinal benefits of face steaming

We have talked about the benefits of face steaming concerning beauty and skincare. But, face steaming has another important benefit for your health too.

Adding essential oils can help in relieving sinus congestion and headaches. When you do face steam, you inhale the steam with your nose and mouth. This opens the airways and provides relief to the pressure and pain caused by the sinus.

Also, inhaling water and peppermint steam helps with cold and flu treatment. This is exactly why I started with face steaming two weeks back.

Because of the weather changes, it is a huge risk to mistake any health change as normal. My senses were completely blocked. Hence, I turned to steam. And, with regular use of it, I am much better. Lastly, facial steam acts as a great inhalator.

Is it bad to steam your face everyday?

While there are so many benefits of face steaming, practicing it every day can instead be harmful to your skin.

Given that the skin on your face is extremely sensitive, steaming your face every day can irritate or burn your skin.

I only do it once a week because that suits my schedule. But you can also stretch it up to twice a week according to your skin type and comfort.

Conclusion

Initially, I began using a face steamer to cure my sense of blockages. But, now I have been using it regularly for all the benefits of face steaming I mentioned above.

Also, as I stated in the beginning, you can either use a face steamer or you can have your DIY face steamer ready at home.

It will not be easy in the beginning. In fact, at times, it even gives a burning sensation. Hence, make sure that water is boiled but not too boiled.

Even when it seems harmless, face steaming can have side effects on certain skin conditions. Thus, make sure you do not have any skin problems before you decide to steam your face.

Also, always consider your skin type before you try anything new on your skin.

Face steaming is not a necessary beauty ritual, but if your skin accepts the goodness of steam and you enjoy the spa-like experience from the comfort of your home, then there’s nothing wrong with including it in your skincare routine.
