  2. Creativity: Making decorations is a great way to use your imagination and try out different patterns and materials.
  3. Tradition: Some handcrafted ornaments used during Diwali, such as Diyas and rangoli, have historical roots. They help you connect to your cultural background.

Now that you’re familiar with the benefits, let’s give you 10 DIY ideas that will make your Diwali decoration a fun process.

10 Diwali Decoration Handmade Ideas

I am sure these ideas are going to help you to decorate every corner of your home.

1. Diya Painting

Painting Diyas, or traditional oil lamps, is a fun and imaginative way to give your Diwali décor a unique flair.

You can use old Diyas. But if your Diyas are brand-new, soak them in water for a few hours and let them dry fully before you start painting on them.

Put on an acrylic paint base coat like white as a base. This makes the colors above seem more vivid.

Give the base coat enough time to fully dry. Paint any patterns you like, including floral or geometric patterns, or classic themes like mandalas and paisleys.

To prevent smearing, let each color dry completely before adding another color.

Once the paint and decorations have dried fully, finish it with a coat of clear varnish.

This will give the Diyas a shiny polish and safeguard your artwork. Your Diyas can be utilized as soon as everything dries.

Light each diya with an oil-dipped cotton wick to provide a cozy, joyous glow.

2. Tea light Jars

Making tea light holders out of jars is a classy and easy way to give your Diwali décor some warmth and charm.

Using a paintbrush or sponge, paint one color throughout the jar. Use acrylic paint to let the colors pop out beautifully.

Make designs on the jar using masking tape, such as stripes or chevrons.

To show the patterns, remove the tape after painting the entire jar and let it dry.

Paint glass frosted to provide a translucent look.

For a similar effect, you can also dilute white acrylic paint with a small amount of water.

Then, you can attach ribbons, beads, lace, or other decorations to the jars. To firmly attach these components, make sure you glue them together.

Before using the jars, be sure that all the paint and adhesive have dried fully. Put an LED candle or a tea light inside each jar.

If you use actual tea lights, make sure the jars are kept out of the path of anything that can catch fire.

3. Door Hanging Torans

Making door hangings, or torans, is a customary Diwali home décor idea.

If you want to go the DIY way this year, then the first step is to decide the toran’s size and design.

If it helps, draft your design on the fabric first. Then, cut it into the appropriate shapes: triangles, semicircles, rectangles, etc.

Arrange bells, sequins, and beads to complete the fabric pieces. These charms can be sewn or glued onto the fabric.

Create embroidered patterns on the fabric by using thread. Traditional designs like flowers, paisleys, and geometric forms can be a part of this.

Put beads or bells on the bottom of each piece to give it that festive sound as the Toran travels and to add some decoration.

Sew or attach a ribbon or strong thread to the toran’s upper edge.

Make sure it is fastened firmly so the Toran can be hung above a doorway.

4. Rangoli Designs

A colorful and traditional way to celebrate Diwali is to make rangoli designs.

Choose the design you wish to create. Geometric patterns, floral motifs, and traditional symbols like Diyas, peacocks, and paisleys are all included in traditional designs.

For your rangoli, use a level, spotless surface like the floor of your living room, hallway, or doorstep.

To sketch the outline of your design, use white powder or chalk. Place the stencil on the surface and outline it, if you’re using one.

Start using powder, rice, or colored sand to fill in the design. Working your way outward, start in the middle of the design.

Once the main sections are completed, use contrasting colors to add detailed details and patterns. Around the rangoli, place Diyas to create a festive atmosphere.

5. Paper Quilled Wall Art

A great option to give your Diwali decorations a distinctive and elaborate touch is to make paper-quilled wall art.

Choose a pattern for your wall art. Design it with flower themes, peacocks, mandalas, Diyas, and other Diwali-appropriate patterns.

Lightly draw the design on the canvas or cardstock. This will act as a placement guide for your quilled components.

Now roll the crafting strips into different shapes and sizes using the quilling process tool, as required for your design.

To fix the forms, glue the ends of the strips together. Tweezers are useful for precise handling.

Start sticking your quilled forms to your cardstock or canvas’s sketched design.

6. Floral Garland

Making floral garlands for Diwali is a classic and traditional way to decorate your home.

These garlands add a festive and fragrant atmosphere to doorways, windows, and other areas of your home.

Pick durable, fresh flowers with an extended shelf life. Because of their brilliant color and durability, marigolds are a popular option for Diwali.

To create the necessary length of your garland, cut a piece of floral wire or strong thread. To allow for tying knots, add a few additional inches.

Start at the base of the flower by inserting the needle into the middle of the flower head, exiting through the top.

To get to the knot, slide the petal down the thread. To make a dense garland, repeat with the following bloom, pushing it up against the one before it.

Keep going until the desired length is achieved.

When you have a sufficient number of flowers strung, secure the flowers in place by twisting the wire or tying a knot at the end of the thread.

You can string beads, tiny leaves, or other ornamental items with the flowers for some more flair. Finally, hang the garland in your desired place.

7. Fabric Lampshades

Making fabric lampshades is a fun way to give your Diwali décoration a bit of warmth and elegance.

Pick a cloth that goes well with your interior design. Gentle, semi-transparent materials are ideal for a diffused, gentle light.

Take measurements of the lampshade frame’s height and circumference. If the fabric has any wrinkles, iron it.

Measure and mark the cloth using a measuring tape or ruler per the measurements of the lampshade frame.

Sew the cloth following the indicated lines. Put a little amount of fabric glue or spray adhesive on the lampshade frame.

Press the cloth onto the adhesive section beginning at one of the frame’s seams.

As you proceed around the frame, secure the fabric in place using clothespins or binder clips.

The extra cloth should be folded over the top and bottom edges of the frame and adhered to the interior using adhesive.

Beaded fringe, lace, and ribbon are examples of decorative trim. Take off the binder clips or clothespins after the adhesive has dried fully.

Make sure the cloth lampshade fits firmly on the lamp base before placing it there.

8. Pine Cone Charms for Decoration

A charming and rustic approach to including some natural beauty in your Diwali decorations is to use pine cone decorations.

Pine cones can be painted gold and sprinkled with gold glitter. For a luxurious appearance, hang them with a gold ribbon.

My niece painted this pine cone she found in our garden.

You can also use a range of vivid hues, such as purple, blue, green, and red. For a colorful presentation, add matching glitter and accessories.

Simply tie a twine bow and leave the pine cones as they are. This style is ideal for a more natural and rustic theme.

9. Lippan Wall Art

Just like paper quilling, Lippan wall art can also take the Diwali ambiance of your home from 0 to 100.

My niece has created some of the most magnificent Lippan art that now adds to the charm of our space.

You start by drawing your desired pattern on cardboard. Then, trace the pattern with glue and clay.

Let it dry for 7-8 hours.

Once the clay is hard, apply a coat of white paint to the pattern. Let it dry again.

Then, it’s your creativity on how you want to play with the colors.

Finally, paste the decorative mirrors to add the final bling and let your masterpiece shine through the walls of your home.

Here’s a video tutorial from my niece’s Lippan art collection to help you bring it to life.

10. Photo light with twist

While fairy lights are a classic Diwali tradition, you may add some fun by hanging picture frames in between the lights!

Select the most treasured family moments and get the pictures printed. Hang them on a string with ornamental pegs.

You may make a big wall show by hanging the fairy lights with pictures across a wall.

This is a good way to make a focal point in your space.

To capture the light from the outdoors during the day and the fairy lights at night in your shots, drape some fairy lights around a window frame.

Attach the pictures to look like decorations and arrange the fairy lights on a wall in the shape of a tree. This gives it a fun and imaginative touch.
