Anxiety has become a part of our lifestyle now. The lives we are living today have made the use of words like stress, anxiety, and panic way more common than the use of words like peace, kindness, and happiness.
Hi everyone, welcome back to my blog. Today, I’ll be addressing the issues surrounding anxiety and the effects they have on our body – our skin and our hair.
It’s been a long time since I have written anything for the skin and hair section of my blog. And, I wanted this new attempt to have a touch of self-improvement to it.
Anxiety has become a common point of discussion today. And even though it is common, there still exists a fine line where people are yet to understand its seriousness.
Out of the many ways in which anxiety affects the human body, its impact on the skin and hair are usually overlooked. Yes, anxiety has an impact on our mental health. Alongside, anxiety has effects on our physical appearance too.
I am no professional, but as a part of my work, my research leads me to various topics every other day. So, let’s look into today’s topic part by part.
Impact of anxiety on skin
Even though the anxiety initially occurs in our brain, a large portion of its consequences are physical. These are easily visible on our skin and they don’t just end at tensed shoulders and furrowed eyebrows.
Stress has a great impact on the skin. It causes a change in the chemistry between our brain and body. This chemistry is usually called the “brain-skin connection”.
The two most common effects of anxiety and stress on our skin are acne and oily skin. The human body releases the fight-or-flight hormone called cortisol when under stress. Cortisol is also referred to as the “stress hormone”.
The release of cortisol has some sincere effects on the skin. An increase in stress leads the adrenal gland to release more cortisol. This increases the activity of our sebaceous gland to produce more oil and sebum. Other consequences of the cortisol release are:
– It weakens the skin’s immune system weakening it to defend itself
– It delays the healing and disrupts the skin’s natural barrier
– It leads to oxidative stress that results in wrinkles, lines, and lackluster skin
– It increases inflammation in the body
– It might even lead up to conditions like eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis
– It causes some less understood skin problems like skin picking and dysmorphia
Because anxiety is usually expressed with emotional facial expressions, it is closely linked to the various skin problems mentioned above. From dry, itchy skin to fine lines and wrinkles, anxiety and the overflow of feelings that comes along harms the natural look of our skin.
Impact of anxiety on hair
Anxiety is the stressful reaction we have towards the problems and difficult situations in life. While we usually relate anxiety with issues related to the mind, as much as the skin, anxiety has its effects on our hair too.
While hair loss is quite common, hair loss due to anxiety is not so common. Yes, anxiety and stress can lead to hair loss. Another hair problem that is indeed common is that of white hair. It is the consequence of anxiety and stress too.
Anxiety leads to different kinds of hair loss. These are:
- Alopecia Areata – In this situation, a portion of hair suddenly falls out. It even leads to causing hair loss in patches and ends with baldness.
- Telogen Effluvium – This happens when the number of hair follicles growing hair reduces. This leaves the hair follicles to dormancy, which finally leads to hair loss.
As mentioned above, the release of cortisol leads the sebaceous glands to produce more oil and sebum. This sebum clogs the scalp pores and hinders hair growth.
Anxiety and stress, don’t just mess with the “brain-skin connection”, it also affects the biochemistry of our hair follicles. This leads them to the rest phase in hair growth.
How to cope up with anxiety and stress?
I have said this in my previous blogs and I’d say it again – Mental Health is individual. There is no one-size-fits-all kind of solution to it.
There can be different reasons for stress for different people. Hence, the solutions are different as well.
While I am no professional to cure anxiety, here are a few things you can do to cope up with your anxiety so it doesn’t create an impact on your skin and hair.
- Start reading. It helps in increasing the level of concentration and thus decrease stress.
- Stick to your skincare and haircare routines.
- Don’t skip your meals. A balanced diet and a healthy you should be a priority always.
- Talk to somebody who would listen to what’s bothering you.
- Take professional help – consult a therapist.
In the kind of life we are living today, it is extremely easy to feel anxious and stressed about different things in life.
The self-comparison that we do, the social media lies we see around ourselves, the pace at which our lifestyles run – all these contribute to the increased levels of anxiety and stress.
