Mental wellbeing and mental health has been a challenge for all of us, especially this year. From the pandemic to many other disparities that occurred around the world, it has been hard to be at the best of our state.

Life has been at its peak to throw challenges, make us bend in front of nature, and give us reasons to realize that we are a part of nature and not the center of it. Nevertheless, with so much happening in and around our lives, this year has been nothing less than a roller-coaster ride. Hence, it has been harder than usual to keep up with our mental wellbeing.

Mental wellbeing as a term cannot have a one-size-fits-all meaning. It is different for everyone. For me, it is to write. For you, it could be fitness or dance or simply sleeping. It varies from person to person.

One might use mental wellbeing to talk about what we are feeling, how we are feeling, why we are feeling, and how we are coping with it. Also, more people being vocal about mental wellness has contributed positively to propagate more people to talk about it, to share their stories with the world.

Finally, the power of voice is coming to life. People have begun to acknowledge the equal importance of mental wellbeing with respect to physical fitness. They are now understanding that having a sound mind is as significant as having a sound body.

With more people talking about it, with more people sharing their experiences, with more people allowing themselves to open about it – mental wellbeing has gained all the vitality it requires.

Therefore, here are a few ways to add to your daily routine to help you stay on track with your mental wellbeing.

  1. Pause and reflect back on your achievements
  2. Wake up with the right attitude
  3. Start maintaining a journal
  4. Do what you enjoy
  5. Don’t hold yourself back
  6. Mutual love and admiration
  7. Practice gratitude and self-care

Let’s read them one by one, one at a time.

  1. Pause and reflect back on your achievements

Last night was one of those nights when I question myself on how I have achieved nothing. It was one of those rare times when I forget to be grateful for my progress and begin to question myself for not achieving a lot. When I forget that good things take time.

So, what did I do to get back into that space of mental wellbeing and satisfaction? Take a deep breath. Pause and reflect back on your achievements. This is what I do when negativity tries to conquer my mind.

Firstly, it is absolutely normal to think that way. You cannot stay motivated all the time, Hence, it is normal. But, what is injurious to our mental wellbeing is to stay stuck at it. And, in order to break that loop of negativity, you ought to get up and reflect back at your journey – from where you started and how far you have come. This is what I did last night.

  1. Wake up with the right attitude

In order to have a good day, it is extremely important to start on a good note. I know all days are not the same. One cannot stay calm and at their best selves all the time. But, waking up with a good attitude helps every time.

A good mood in the morning helps you stay productive all day long. If you have anything bothering you early in the morning, try to replace the feeling of worry with that of satisfaction. Do something that calms you down. It could be a cup of coffee, a jog down the park, or maybe listening to your favorite music.

The right attitude in the morning helps you to be at the zest of your tasks for the day and keeps you on track.

  1. Start maintaining a journal

This advice is sure to come when you have a writer giving you all the tactics to help you with your mental wellbeing.

Jokes aside, it actually helps. Tracking your entire day in a journal helps you to keep a record of everything. And, most importantly it helps you to express yourself without the fear of being judged.

Sometimes, all a person needs is someone to hear them. But, the harsh truth is we have many good speakers but not many good listeners around us. A journal or a diary becomes that listener. It allows you to vent out all of your thoughts. It gives you a platform to express yourself. This acts as an aid to clear your mind, let go of all the negativity and have a calm state of mind.

  1. Do what you enjoy

Life shouldn’t just be about working your ass off to make a living and survive in this world. That is the worst kind of life to live, I suppose.

While you work to make ends meet, don’t forget to enjoy for yourself. Don’t negate what you love in the name of doing what is important. Love what you do.

For me, enjoyment is this, sharing my words with you. For you, it can be anything- talking to your friends, dancing, painting. It can be anything under the sun that genuinely makes you happy. Do it. Don’t keep it for later. Do it now. Nothing keeps your mental wellbeing fine than doing what you love and enjoy.

  1. Don’t hold yourself back

Procrastination is a real enemy. But, sometimes we become our worst enemy. Holding ourselves back in the name of “I am not ready yet”, is a very easy way to procrastinate.

The negativity inside us is our biggest enemy. If you control and conquer it, you are halfway there. So, don’t hold yourselves back. Whatever it is you’re procrastinating about, just go ahead and do it. Give it.

Last week I attended this workshop on emotional intelligence by Katrina Pavlova. She rightly said that studies have shown that half of the things we procrastinate about, half of the things we fear about before taking a step, actually don’t even happen in the reality. It is just a vision of our mind that holds us back. And, if you can overcome that and take the very first step, you have already controlled your thoughts in the right manner.

  1. Mutual love and admiration

Love is the force that drives the world. You cannot be hard and cruel to yourself or others every time. It is stronger than any medication that exists for mental wellbeing. But, at the same time, it is hard to practice.

While some of us enjoy giving love and spreading all the positivity, some people love receiving it to feel good about themselves. Love requires a lot of selflessnesses. There is a reason why the word is mostly accompanied by the adjective “unconditional”. Practice it and spread it.

  1. Practice gratitude and self-care

Being grateful for what you have is a very pious way to look after your mental wellbeing. Practicing self-care is another way to do it. While gratitude is all about being grateful in life, self-care is different for different people. For some it is skincare, for some, it is haircare, for some it is dancing madly to their favorite tunes, for some, it is nothing but peaceful sleep.

Whatever it is for you, practice it regularly. Remind yourself who you are. Appreciate the time you get to spend with your family and your loved ones. Indulge in physical activities. Align your mental wellbeing with your physical wellbeing. Practice gratitude and self-care.

Mental wellbeing isn’t a hoax. Simple ways of living can help one to keep up with their mental wellness. It is as important as any other aspect of your life. The mental and physical wellness of a person goes hand-in-hand. One drops the other is sure to get affected.

However, the degree of your wellness is dependent on how much time you dedicate to it. Working and hustling are fine but taking care of your health in every manner should always a priority.

After all, what will you do with the money if you aren’t sound enough to spend it?

I hope I could add value to your stay in my space.
